The efforts put in over the years by Paul Williams at Halton Baseball Club were recognised on Thursday 22 September when he was presented with the 2016 Sports Volunteer of the Year award by the Mayor of Halton, Councillor Ged Philbin.
The GB Baseball Team was coasting along with a 4-0 lead over Russia after five innings on Tuesday in the main stadium at Hoofddorp in their final first round pool game at the European Baseball Championship. But then the game blew up in GB’s faces.
The GB Baseball Team dug themselves magnificently out of a 5-0 deficit against Sweden on Monday afternoon, came back from another run behind to tie the score in the 10th inning – and then lost the game in the 11th inning to go 0-4 in the European Championship.
In one of the best games played so far at the European Championship, GB fell behind Germany early on Sunday, then took a 2-1 lead, and then saw the Germans come back to tie and win a dramatic contest with a decisive run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
This was a frustrating game for the GB Baseball Team, who played on completely even terms with the Czech Republic on Saturday afternoon, matched the Czechs in most facets of the game – but still lost 4-1.
