BBF APPOINTS LIAM CARROLL AS GREAT BRITAIN BASEBALL HEAD COACH

01/22/2015, 5:15pm GMT
By by British Baseball Federation

The Executive Board of the British Baseball Federation has appointed Liam Carroll to be the new Head Coach for Great Britain Baseball.

Carroll, who is British-born and based in the UK, succeeds Sam Dempster, who retired shortly after keeping Great Britain in the European Championship A Pool last summer with a ninth-place finish.

Liam Carroll’s appointment represents a cultural shift in the way the GB programme will be run.  As a London-based Head Coach, he will be on hand to oversee the GB programme from the Cadet (15U) through to the Senior National Team.

A former GB player, Carroll has been the Head Coach of the GB Lions for the past two years and has served as an Assistant Coach with the Senior National Team.  He was short-listed along with GB Assistant Coach Brian Essery and former player Brad Marcelino from a field of 17 candidates and was appointed after a rigorous interview process.

Essery and Marcelino, two of the most important figures in recent GB Baseball history, will continue to work with the programme and support Coach Carroll.

COMMENTS

BBF National Teams Programme Director Marty Cullen said: “Liam earned this.  He’s done an incredible job with the Lions – and programme-wide for that matter.  When you have one of the best coaches on your doorstep, you don’t pass that opportunity up.  We’re expecting big things.”

Liam Carroll said: “Opportunities like this don’t come along very often and I will do my very best to advance the programme, both on and off the field.

“I am extremely thankful to have been given this opportunity by the BBF,” Carroll added.  “Thinking about the calibre of people who represent the programme now, and those who have been involved in the past, I feel like I am standing on the shoulders of giants and I am excited to build on the traditions of Great Britain Baseball.”

Coach Carroll will have a little over a year to prepare for his first major tournament as Team GB Head Coach when he will lead the team at the 2016 European Championships and attempt to solidify GB's position as a force in the A Pool.
