Eight university baseball teams descended on Farnham Park over the weekend of 8-9 October to contest the autumn edition of the 2016 National University Baseball Championships, and it was Durham University that emerged victorious to claim their first-ever title.

National Baseball League veteran Grant Delzoppo has claimed his first batting title in 2016 at the age of 44, while Francisco Gonzalez became the first player to defend the NBL’s Most Valuable Two-Way Player award since BBF Hall of Famer Simon Pole.

The GB Baseball Team was coasting along with a 4-0 lead over Russia after five innings on Tuesday in the main stadium at Hoofddorp in their final first round pool game at the European Baseball Championship.  But then the game blew up in GB’s faces.

The GB Baseball Team dug themselves magnificently out of a 5-0 deficit against Sweden on Monday afternoon, came back from another run behind to tie the score in the 10th inning – and then lost the game in the 11th inning to go 0-4 in the European Championship.

GB drops 3-2 heartbreaker to Germany at the European Championship

In one of the best games played so far at the European Championship, GB fell behind Germany early on Sunday, then took a 2-1 lead, and then saw the Germans come back to tie and win a dramatic contest with a decisive run in the bottom of the seventh inning.  

GB plays tough against the Czechs but loses second game at the European Championship

This was a frustrating game for the GB Baseball Team, who played on completely even terms with the Czech Republic on Saturday afternoon, matched the Czechs in most facets of the game – but still lost 4-1.

“It’s always disappointing to lose,” GB Head Coach Liam Carroll said, “even against the Dutch.  I was pleased with how we stayed up and confident all through the game.  But -- they played better.”
