“If you could be a kid for as long as you want when you play baseball.” Cal Ripken.
As the National Governing Body of Baseball, one of our objectives is to promote our sport to all, and it starts with the next generation.
On Sunday, 8th April, the British Baseball Federation is hosting a Mix-n-Match event for youths to experience baseball. The day includes a full day of baseball for all kids. Regardless, whether you are a beginner, skilled, girl or boy, you are welcomed to attend. There is no need to be a part of a team; we will mix you with players matched with your age and skill. Games will be organised all day, and we will provide professional instruction, in between games. Also, there will be coaches from our member's clubs available to assist and organise the kids. Teams will be arranged based on skill and ages.
It's a great day of baseball as there will be youths from all over the UK and coaches to assist. Families are welcome to attend. There are scheduled adult baseball games taking place, on adjacent diamonds also to watch. For example, our top League is the National Baseball League (NBL). Opening Day in the NBL is taking place on the same day, between the Southampton Mustangs v London Mets. You can go over at any time and watch the action of some of the top teams in the country compete.
We will be hosting a Skills Competition for youths, e.g., who runs the fastest around the bases, who can throw the furthest for accuracy and a hitting competition. There will be prizes awarded. So kids give it a chance!
Baseball is an Olympic sport. GB Baseball coaches will be available to answer questions about how to be a part of GB Baseball and the opportunities for kids. Further, coaches will evaluate youth players over at our Skills Competition, who are interested in making our new GB Baseball U12 team.
This year, GB Baseball (a part of the British Baseball Federation) will be sending a record of four teams to the Confederation of European Baseball Tournaments this summer to compete in Europe:
The day's action is all happening on four baseball fields at Farnham Park, Beaconsfield Road, Slough, SL2 3BP. Farnham Park is the national facility for baseball and softball. Situated in between all of the fields at Farnham Park is the Home Plate Kitchen (HPK), where hot food and cold drinks will be on sale all day. There is even a recreational area at HPK to relax, play some table tennis and make new friends. Plenty of free parking.
So, come out and enjoy a great day of baseball lined up by the British Baseball Federation. It’s a great way for the BBF and its members to showcase the great experience and fun, youths can take part in playing baseball. There is no fee to watch and for youths to take part in any of our events.
Schedule (subject to change) among all the fields
Time: 9:00- 12:00
13:00 - 17:00
Mid day we will be organising the kids near the NBL game to watch, take a break, get a snack, ask questions to our professional coach and our GB Coaches. Further, prizes and GB Baseball merchandise will be available. We will then resume our afternoon schedule.
How it works
Upon arrival, you will be assisted and directed to what group and field your assigned. Periodically, you will be rotated to fields to take part (optional) in the Skills Competition, professional instruction clinic, and learning more about the GB Baseball experience.
Come and leave at any time. It is a relaxed day of baseball and fun for the entire family.

Amanda Kettle, Treasurer for the BBF, said, "we are in a good financial condition. Moreover, we need to consider the efforts and the fun impact the UK Team will have on youths to take part in playing internationally and represent our clubs. After careful consideration the British Baseball Federation (BBF) have decided to donate £600 towards Team UK coach-pitch baseball programme. We ask everyone to support the UK Team and we hope the players have great fun in CZ.'
NOTE: The above BBF donation comes from off balance sheet donations raised towards such programmes. It will not affect the BBF operating funds or budget.
At the time of writing, we have raised £570 + £600 (BBF donation above) = £1170, towards our target of £2,000.
Please donate what you can to help ensure our youngest baseball talent has the best possible chance of success at SuperCup 2018.
The National Baseball League (NBL) is the marquee league in the British Baseball Federation (BBF). In 2018, it will be a six-team division, with the announcement the Birmingham Bandits, have been accepted to be a part of the NBL for the upcoming season. There was a lot to consider in the expansion of the NBL from a logistical to a development standpoint, for the BBF.
The inclusion of Birmingham into the NBL highlights the route of the expansion of our sport in the UK's second largest city population of over 3.6 million. The metropolis is one of the youngest cities in Europe with almost 40% of its population being under 15 years of age. Transportation to and from Birmingham highlights the ease to travel to from by train or car for games. It is the home to five universities and over 73,000 students. The perfect young persons mix to attract the next generation of baseball players in our sport.
James Moran, coach for the Bandits said ' I'm really pleased that we are going to be stepping up to facing the best teams in the country. We will play tough but in the right spirit and I am confident we will be competitive from the off. We go into the season with the majority of last years roster, but we will also be significantly strengthening between now and the start of the season. Anyone who wants a challenge, and has the desire to be successful in the NBL should give me a call.'
When considering the benefits of expansion in Birmingham, the BBF board tallied the positives and collectively agreed to vote the Bandits in the NBL. Further, there was careful consideration given to the benefit of expanding the NBL by a club which has attracted a high calibre of players living in the Midlands to further clubs plan to attract more calibre players from afar to compete at the highest level of baseball in the UK.
Duncan Hoyle, president of the Bandits, said ' Its a fantastic day for the club to be accepted into the NBL. It has been a real club effort over the last few seasons to get us to a point where we could make an application to join the NBL, and now we are part of it we will do everything we can to make the expansion a success. The real hard work for us starts immediately - we have a lot of catching up to do with the established NBL teams but its a challenge we are really up for and looking forward to. I would ask everyone to get behind the club in this venture - its been a long time since a club from outside of the south have been part of the NBL, and if we are to be successful at the highest level then it can only be a positive development for British Baseball. I think we have brilliant leadership for the Bandits with James Moran and Dennis Grogan being two of the most respected coaches in the Midlands who are both hungry to step up and succeed in the NBL.'
With any expansion comes risk, but the management of the Birmingham Bandits assured the BBF of its plan to work on meeting targets. The complete list of teams for the 2018 NBL season are as follows:
A spokesperson for the BBF said, "we congratulate the Birmingham Bandits on being a part National Baseball League. The Birmingham Bandits now have the benefit to build a fan base and participation in our sport within a great city. GO BANDITS!'
