BBF extends Rawlings deal for official game balls

03/30/2011, 4:07pm BST
By British Baseball Federation

The British Baseball Federation has extended its contract with Rawlings to provide official BBF game balls for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Apart from Rawlings' excellent reputation worldwide, a key benefit of the ball deal is the very attractive prices which their UK supplier - The Baseball and Softball Shop - have offered. This should result in significant savings for BBF clubs compared to previous years. As was the case in 2010, the Rawlings deal does not include income for the BBF, so the full financial benefit will go directly to the Clubs. The contract is for two years, ending on 31 December 2012.

As part of the contract the BBF has agreed to provide the following benefits/services to Rawlings:

  • Exclusivity (i.e. BBF teams will use only the official ball in BBF competitions and the BBF Board are advising teams they will strictly enforce this rule)
  • Various advertising and marketing services

The BBF is not contractually obliged to do so, but clubs are being advised to place a Rawlings advertising image on their official club websites and add hyperlinks to the website of the Rawlings UK distributor.

Rawlings has agreed to continue to supply the official ball at a very attractive price. The Rawlings ROLB model, which will be the official ball for all NBL games, will be supplied to clubs at £34.00 per dozen (including VAT).

For the Adult Minor Leagues (AAA, AA and A Leagues) and the Under-16 (Pony) Leagues, the official ball will be the Rawlings ROLB1 model, which will be supplied at a price of £27.00 per dozen (including VAT). There will be no official ball stipulated for Under-13 (Bronco) games, but the BBF still recommends the use of the ROLB1 ball.

If teams in the Adult Minor Leagues or the Youth Leagues wish to use the more expensive ROLB model instead of the lower cost ROLB1 in official BBF competitions, this would be allowed.

Only Rawlings balls supplied by the official Rawlings UK distributor will be allowed in official BBF competitions, and Rawlings balls purchased from other suppliers (e.g., from overseas) will not be permitted. The official ball will be easily recognisable as it will bear the BBF logo. The penalties for not using an official ball will be applied strictly as per BBF Regulations.

Unfortunately, the BBF only very recently renewed the new ball contract with The Baseball and Softball Shop to supply the Rawlings game balls. This delay has not allowed the supplier enough time to get new balls into the UK before the season starts, and there will be an initial order limit of 6 dozen per NBL team and 3 dozen per AAA-AA-A league team to ensure game balls for all teams for the start of the season. If teams require more than these initial limits the vendor will ship the remainder once new supplies have arrived during the season. This will impact BBF teams as they may have to have their orders dispatched in two shipments during the season and will be charged two deliveries in the first year contract.

Delivery charge will be no more than £6.00 per 10 dozen (minimum charge £6.00).

The Baseball and Softball Shop require payment before dispatch, and they accept credit/debit cards, cheque or BACS payment details as below:
